Example for Training Focus rating completely off
Hello Stefanie,
I stumbled over this a few times in the past. The "Training Focus" rating the COROS Metrics give you after a "Run" can be totally wrong since they seem to be based only on the running speed = pace.
Following I have a perfect example for you, recorded at a hill climb - the ground was too good to be rated as "Trail Run" and also this would not have triggered the Training Focus rating as I wanted it (yes, I'm aware that such "non flat" metrics pull down my running stats).
However:
Basically, it was a 4.5k Uphill run with an elevation gain of 270m, it took me 22:41min and I had an average HR of 170/min. The Training Focus said "Base" ...
Sure, the average pace was at 5:06min/km which is perfectly in my flat Base pace but as you can see in the graph, Effort Pace was mainly at Threshold / Anaerobic Endurance, Heartrate was at Anaerobic Endurance and Running Power was in Zone 4. All values are legit, I do not question one of them so the Pace 2 I was using in this case did a good job. But in the end a Running Focus rating of "Base" never felt more wrong.
Since COROS actually needs to do a lot of work with the implementations of cycling metrics in EvoLab based on the release of the Dura, please rework the Running Metrics as well.
It would make things more reliable if ratings like Training Focus are not only based on one measurement when there are 4 data sources available: Pace, Effort Pace (which only is another calculation), Heart Rate and Running power.
If you'd make the rating based on 3 out of 4 (or 2/3) the chances of a realistic rating are much higher and would give COROS a better reputation of their metrics which in my opinion are actually pretty good but need some improvements at the edges.

Hey Joe,
Thanks for sharing this question with us. Training Focus primarily uses training load and intensity to factor into its calculation. I noticed you didn't share your training load here- did you feel that the Training Load for this activity was accurate? That would be a key data metric to look at to better understand how Training Focus was calculated.
It would likely be beneficial for one of our COROS Coaches to take a deeper dive in your activity data. If you are interested, I'd encourage you to contact them at Coach@coros.com0 -
Hi Stephanie,
Training Load was at 128 which I would say is quiet high for a 22min duration.
My point is: If 3 out of 4 measurements / metrics say that this was an intense workout with mainly anaerobic efforts than the overall rating, the so called Training Focus can not be "Base" .0 -
Joe Runner.
I understand your concern. I would say that Training Load is high for 22 minutes, although you did mention that your heart rate was 170, which in that case could make sense. That also shows that you were definitely training above Zone 2. Without seeing the full picture of this activity data, and your HR/Pace zones, its hard to say why your Training Focus was "Base", however a coach can take a deeper look if you wish. coach@coros.com0
