GPS Challenge - I did not expect the APEX 2 Pro is getting this right but that poor ... ?
Hi Stefanie,
First of all I want to point out that I in general do not care if my gps tracks have perfect sharp corners or if it shows me on the wrong side of the street. Most of the times 98% is good enough for me. With the Apex 2 Pro I own it burps a bit that the antenna design seems to be not good so that in most situations gps is just as good as of the Pace 2 I already owned before.
With that being said I am one of those how honors every improvement COROS tries to get better on the software / logarithm side. On my side, I like to do some gps challenges to find out what I can expect from my COROS watch and what not, but now let's get to the "issue" itself.
On one of my running courses I pass an outlook on top of a hill. It's a special outlook, you can check it on Infos zum Turm | Stadt Herrenberg (unfortunately no English website) with a height of 35m and one spiralized stairway with 174 steps leads up and another one down.
I normally do this "stair run" 3x before I go on.
As I stated in the headline: I did not expect that gps recording get's this perfectly right but with the "crop circles" it drew I was also not happy. See:
The Apex 2 Pro was in Dual Frequency all systems on Mode with 3D Distance on since I was in Trail Run Mode.
The circles are not completely wrong but they are all flat = on the ground whilst in the topo graph you can see the 3 peaks of the tower.
After I saw this I recalled that COROS just announced an improved Climbing Mode, so I went again to the tower, put the Apex 2 Pro into Climbing Mode and walked slowly up and down the spiralized chairs, see:
Again flat circles and if you ask me in Trail Running mode the pathway of the stairs was drawn better than in Climbing mode. So this was really underwhelming.
Now it is possible that the gps recording basically is right but based on the used map in the Mobile App it can not be displayed in real 3D - but in such a case: How do you do that on vertical cliffs ?
If you could create real good visualizations of such situations this would be a real WOW putting COROS on another level compared to the competition.
If your team is interested in the record files let me know.
Best,
Joe

Hey Joe,
Wow, this is quit the GPS testing scenario!
You should be able to look at your activity summary in 3D in the COROS app. If you open the activity summary, on the right hand side of the map. There are two buttons. The image of the stacked layers opens up to different map types, and I'd encourage you to select "Satellite." Then, change the 2D version to 3D.
With that, you should be able to see your tracks in 3D.0 -
Hello Stephanie,
already did that but it's a definitive "no".
Whilst in general the route follows the terrain in 3D, at the point where I run up and down the tower it's just flat circles, see:0
