How COROS Watches Track Sleep

All COROS watches support 24/7 sleep tracking and give you detailed insights into your quality and stages of sleep.

Sleep Tracking: The Basics

*Applies to PACE 3, PACE 4, PACE Pro, COROS NOMAD, APEX 2, APEX 2 Pro, APEX 4, VERTIX 2, VERTIX 2S. For other watch models, please view details at the bottom of this article.

Your COROS watch automatically recognizes and tracks sleep 24 hours a day, giving you insights into your sleep quality and sleep stages.

  • Sleep lasting more than 3 hours will receive an overall sleep quality assessment and have sleep stages recorded for Light Sleep, Deep Sleep, REM, and Awake.
  • Sleep periods shorter than 3 hours will be categorized as a nap. Learn more about tracking naps here.

To receive your sleep quality assessment, simply wear your watch while you sleep. To view last night's sleep details, scroll down from the main watch to the Sleep Widget, or open your COROS app to the first page, where you can view your Sleep card.

Sleep Mode

Sleep Mode quiets the watch by disabling gesture backlight and notification alerts to minimize disruptions. On watches with MIP displays, the backlight will be dimmed. On AMOLED watches (PACE 4 and PACE Pro), the screen will remain off, but if the display is activated during sleep, the time of day on the watch face will initially be displayed with amber-colored text until you interact further with the watch.

How your watch enters Sleep Mode: Your watch automatically enters Sleep Mode when it reaches your Sleep Time listed in the app. You can also manually enter Sleep Mode via the Control Center (accessed by pressing the Action button or swiping left from the main watch face, or from within the Toolbox menu), where you can toggle from Daily Mode to Sleep Mode.

How your watch exits Sleep Mode: Your watch will automatically exit Sleep Mode and resume normal operation when one of the following occurs:

  1. Your Wake Time has been reached.
    • If your watch detects that you are still asleep after reaching your Wake Time, Sleep Mode will remain on until it detects you've woken up.
  2. You manually exit Sleep Mode from Control Center.
  3. You manually entered Sleep Mode to begin with, so the watch will prompt you that you would like to now exit Sleep Mode.
  4. If your watch detects that you've woken up before your Wake Time, it will prompt you if you'd like to exit Sleep Mode. This is determined by step frequency data to make sure you are actually awake and moving around.

Whether or not your watch is in Sleep Mode does not impact sleep tracking.

What can I do if the watch inaccurately detects I am sleeping?

Please ensure you have an accurate Sleep Time and Wake Time specified in the COROS app.  To do so, open the app to the Profile page > Settings > Sleep Settings. (Note: The times are in 24-hour format.)

For best results, make sure to wear the watch properly on your wrist so that the heart rate sensor can detect your heart rate to monitor your sleep status. The sleep tracking will be affected if the watch is loosely worn or if your arm has frequent movements.  HRV is continuously measured in 10-minute intervals during sleep.

If you find that your watch has inaccurately entered Sleep Mode, or has not yet exited Sleep Mode after you've woken up, you can manually toggle this mode off/on.  Long-press the Back button, scroll to Control Center, and scroll to Sleep Mode to adjust the setting.

Will my watch continue to track sleep even if I get up in the middle of the night?

Yes.  Separate sleep periods within the same day will be tracked. Two sleep periods will be merged if the following criteria are met:

  • There is a gap of 1 hour or less in between the sleep periods.
  • There are no obvious activities (workouts, steps) in between the sleep periods.
Can my watch track naps?

Yes.  Any sleep that lasts less than 3 hours will be categorized as a nap.  Learn more about tracking naps here.

Best Practices for Sleep Tracking

  1. Wear your watch as snug as possible on your wrist, and at least 2cm above the wrist bone, to receive accurate heart rate. The accuracy of sleep tracking is influenced by heart rate data.
  2. Make sure your Sleep Settings are accurate in your COROS app. Note: The times listed are in 24-hour time format.
    • Open your COROS app to the Profile page (fourth tab), scroll down to Settings, then open Sleep Settings.
    • Set your Sleep Time and Wake Time to reflect your normal sleep schedule as much as possible. Your COROS watch will still track sleep even outside of this range, but these times will influence Sleep Mode.

Sleep Tracking on PACE 2, APEX Pro, VERTIX 1

Your COROS watch tracks sleep based on the sleep settings listed in your COROS app.  To receive the most accurate sleep tracking, please follow the guidelines below:

Sleep Tracking on PACE 2, APEX Pro, VERTIX 1
  1. Set up the sleep start time on the COROS app as close to when you actually fall asleep as possible.
    • COROS app > Profile page > Settings > Sleep Settings. Please note: The sleep time is in 24-hour format. If you sleep at 9pm, the sleep time should be 21:00.
  2. Wear the watch properly on your wrist so that the HR sensor can detect your heart rate to monitor your sleep status. The sleep tracking will be affected if the watch is loosely worn or your arm has frequent movements.  HRV is continuously measured in 10-minute intervals during sleep.
  3. The watch will start checking if you are asleep two hours before the sleep start time. If you fall asleep 30 minutes prior to the sleep start time, the sleep tracking will start 30 minutes before.
  4. Your COROS watch will continue tracking your sleep even if you take bathroom breaks within the first 6 hours from the time when the watch detects that you are asleep.
  5. When you have two separate sleep periods, after the first wake-up, the watch will detect sleep patterns for the next 5 hours. If you fall asleep again within 5 hours, the next sleep period will be recorded, no matter how long it is. If you fall asleep for the second time after 5 hours, the sleep period will not be recorded.
  6. Your watch will continue tracking your sleep even if you wake up in the middle of the night.  If you fall asleep again within 5 hours of waking up, the watch will continue to track your sleep patterns.  But if you fall asleep after 5 hours, then the sleep period will not be recorded.
