Hill Alerts

Never be caught off guard by a climb again. While following a route on your COROS watch, Hill Alerts notify you of upcoming climbs and descents in real time, so you always know what's coming and can pace yourself accordingly.

How It Works

Hill Alerts are automatically generated from any running, hiking, or mountain climbing route that contains elevation changes. Here's how to get started:

  1. Create or import a route. Build a route in the Explore page of the COROS app, or download one from a third-party source. COROS will automatically identify and segment any significant climbs and descents along the way.
  2. Sync the route to your watch. (In the COROS app, go to Explore > Route Library, select your route, and tap Sync with Device.)
  3. Start navigating. Open Run, Trail Run, or Hike mode on your watch, scroll down to Navigation, and select your route to begin.

What Your Watch Will Display

As you move through your route, your watch will keep you informed every step of the way:

  • At the start of a hill you'll receive an alert showing the segment's length, elevation gain or loss, and average grade.
  • During a hill, your watch will add a "Hill Progress" page, where you can track your progress on it with the remaining distance, remaining elevation gain or loss, and current grade.
  • At the end of the hill, your watch will alert you that the segment is complete.

Preview Your Hills Before You Go

You can preview hill details both in the app and on your watch ahead of time.

In the COROS app: Open your route and tap the Hill Segments button near the bottom of the page. Each segment is color-coded by difficulty, and you can tap any climb or descent to see its distance, grade, and difficulty rating.

On your COROS watch: After selecting your route, scroll through the navigation menu and select Elevation Details to view the course profile along with total elevation gain and loss.

Currently, Hill Alerts are only available in Run, Trail Run, and Hike activity modes.

FAQs

Can I turn off Hill Alerts?

Yes. You can disable Hill Alerts both during and outside of activity tracking.

During activity tracking: Long press the Back button to open the toolbox menu and scroll to the Navigation widget. Scroll down to Hill Alerts to toggle them on or off. (This setting will carry over to any future routes that you follow.)

Standby mode: Open the route on your COROS watch, scroll through the navigation settings, and select Hill Alerts to switch them on or off based on your preference.

What determines if a hill is labeled?

For Hill Alerts we use a custom algorithm that draws on underlying elevation mapping data, and refined through in-depth athlete testing, to identify significant hill segments based on distance and average grade. Our goal is to highlight noteworthy climbs and descents along your route, without cluttering your navigation with every minor bump in the road.

Because every athlete’s perspective on what constitutes a "hill" is unique, and the labeling relies on mapping data which may not perfectly match the current terrain, you may occasionally find a hill that isn't labeled, or an identified hill that you find manageable. These hill segments are a route planning aid to help you prepare for the challenges along your route, and we've aimed to carefully balance our sensitivity to highlight the hills that matter most, giving you a clearer picture of the road ahead.
